- After Messi got close to 50% of the votes in the poll that had more than 1 million participants France Football deleted it
- The page of the poll is now redirecting to the article about Messi’s previous tax problems
Lionel Messi received more than 48% of votes in the poll organised by France Football, the organisers of the Ballon d’Or award. The same poll saw Mohammed Salah occupying second place with 31% and Cristiano Ronaldo being placed third with 8%.
However, after the poll accumulated more than 1 million votes something strange had happened: it was removed and the page where you could cast a vote is now redirecting to the article about Messi’s previous problems with Spain’s tax authorities.
It unclear why France Football decided to take the poll down. The public vote doesn’t factor into deciding the winner of the award.
According to bookmakers, Lionel Messi is the fifth likeliest player to win the award with Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, Juventus’s Cristiano Ronaldo, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann being above the Argentinian forward.
The Ballon d’Or 2018 ceremony will be held on December 3.
Lionel Messi holds the joint record with Cristiano Ronaldo as both players have five individual trophies in their collection. He received the Ballon d’Or in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015. The Portuguese striker is the current holder of the award. Last season, Lionel Messi won La Liga and Copa del Rey with Barcelona and reached the first knockout round of the World Cup with Argentina. The forward scored 34 goals in the league that allowed him to win the European Golden Boot.
