Police in Kampala is investigating circumstances under which thugs robbed a Forex bureau manager of shs300 million in the city centre in broad daylight on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened during lunch hours when thugs travelling on 10 boda bodas knocked Hassan Maalim,35, a manager for Midwest forex bureau at King Fahad Plaza in the city centre.
It all started when Maalim withdrew the money from Diamond Trust Bank along Kampala road and called one of his staff, identified as Asuman Baluku to help him transport the money to the Arua Park Equity Bank branch also found in the city centre.
A few minutes later, Baluku arrived with a boda boda rider and picked the bag containing the money and headed to Arua Park as had been asked by his boss.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson on reaching Wilson Street, the duo was knocked by another Boda Boda coming from the opposite direction.
“The accident was intentional because after knocking the duo, the passenger on the other boda boda jumped off and punched Baluku in the face before taking off with the bag that contained money, “Onyango said.
According to the police mouthpiece, the victim of the robbery realised that all the nearby boda boda riders were part of the mission.
“We have arrested Baluku and the boda boda rider who was taking him, identified as Edirisa Ssebyuma to assist us in investigations into the matter,”Onyango added.
He cautioned the public against transferring huge sums of money without security saying it is risky.
According to security sources, such kind of robberies are on the rise as boda boda riders knock their victims before robbing them of their valuables.
They say that in most cases, at the scenes of crime are many other boda bodas whose occupants are part of the robbery as observation posts.
