A normal human being cannot celebrate killing ordinary villagers like what captured rebel leader Nsabimana Calixte aka Maj Sankara Calixte had been doing, says one of RDF’s most decorated Generals.
Maj Gen Mubarak Muganga, Commader of RDF Forces in Kigali and Eastern Province told a youth audience on Saturday that Sankara was very happy after killing civilians in Kitabi and Nyabimata.
In June last year,it was reported that a gang of armed people attacked Nyabimata sector in border Nyaruguru district, killing several people including a local leader. They fled back to Burundi.
The following month, the National Liberation Front (FLN) was born. In Facebook posts and media interviews on BBC Kinyarwanda service Gahuzamiryango and American broadcaster VOA, Nsabimana Calixte aka Maj Sankara Calixte claimed to be the spokesman.
Sankara repeatedly said the rebel group, whose other leader is Hotel Rwanda movie personality Paul Rusesabagina, were operating in Nyungwe forest, and had even captured districts around it, all of which border Burundi.
In other attacks, Sankara claimed an incident in Kitabi, around same region, where several people sustained serious injuries from the attack.
“He first gave himself the rank of Major, which is not the highest in the military. At least he should have given himself my rank,” Maj Gen Muganga said mockingly, amid laughter from the audience.
“Maybe Sankara said to himself ‘let me not exaggerate you never know soon I could be in Kigali’ [captured]”
Maj Gen Muganga was addressing some 250 members of the Rwanda Patriotism Organization. The group brings together young people mainly from high schools and universities.
Muganga said: “Sankara’s story has suddenly ended. He is here and will face Rwandans to explain to them what he was doing. It is madness.”
Last week the Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) said it has Sankara in custody and would be charged in court.
The arrest of Sankara first emerged on April 15. Local media in the Indian Ocean Islands of Comoros reported his arrest, as he was based there.
In its statement, RIB outlined the charges against Sankara as: “Formation of an irregular armed group; complicity in committing terrorists act; conspiracy and incitements to commit terrorists acts, taking person hostage; murder and looting.”
