Jurgen Klopp has moved swiftly after the disappointment of the Champions League final, to land the holding midfielder who was his number priority target of the summer.

And his spending won’t stop there, with the Reds boss also planning a raid on Lyon for their brilliant forward Nabil Fekir, with a top class goalkeeper now also high on his list.

The two parties have announced Fabinho’s move with a five year contract that will see the Brazilian international stay at Anfield until 2023.

Klopp first made an approach for Fabinho last summer, and has maintained contact with the player’s club Monaco, to pull off a major coup for a player who was also wanted by Manchester United.

“This is something that I always wanted – this is a giant of a team. The infrastructures of the club look exceptional,” Fabinho said.

“A football club of this size coming after my services, I didn’t have to think that much about coming over.

“I will try to create my own history at this football club. Hopefully, on a personal level, I’m able to win titles with this club.”

Liverpool will pay a fee of £40m down, with a furher maximum of £4m structured in achievement-related bonus payments. The deal will officially go through on July 1.

United boss Jose Mourinho had fought to take the athletic midfielder to Old Trafford last summer, with the player’s father saying at the time: “We have talked to Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, we have even been approached by Barcelona.”

Mourinho was preparing a further attempt to sign the player who has four caps for Brazil, but has missed out on his country’s World Cup squad this summer.
