Jose Mourinho Names Young Superstars that could save him whooping cash next season

Losing out so heftily to Manchester City in the title race, being embarrassed at home to Seville in the Champions League and being outsmarted by Antonio Conte in the FA Cup final.

An awful style hasn’t helped. Jose Mourinho has insisted on parking the bus in big games, playing a 4-2-3-1 with such a rigidness that his most creative players are chained instead of liberated.

So, while he’s thinking up targets to try and salvage some sort of positivity out of his United tenure, we delve deeper into the United youth ranks to uncover some gems that may be of use to Mourinho.

Here are seven youngsters the Portuguese could turn to:

Romelu Lukaku brings the physicality up top for the Red Devils, and while he has pace about him, there’s an abundance of it inside Nishan Burkart.

The Swiss youngster scores goals for fun in the development squads and could potentially be ready to make a Marcus Rashford-esque entrance into the first team squad.

With United lacking options up front, it could mean that Burkart is hoisted from the under-23’s and perhaps taken on their pre-season tour of the United States to try and steal a place in the Red Devils’ Premier League squad next season.

The artist – Angel Gomes

Able to play anywhere across the attacking midfield three, Gomes could be the most exciting academy prospect United have had since Rashford.

His vision, dribbling and creativity all resemble current United number 8 Juan Mata, and the young man could well take the ageing Spaniard’s place in the squad in the coming seasons.

The wall – Joel Pereira

Originally picked up by Mourinho from his native Portugal, Pereira has been touted a future United number one by his manager, and rightly so.

Standing at 6’2”, he may have a couple of inches disadvantage on David De Gea, but his reflexes and ability to make saves with his legs and body bring strong similarities between the two ‘keepers.

Sergio Romero looks set to leave Old Trafford, while De Gea’s future is always in doubt with his loyalty to Spain and Real Madrid’s constant goalkeeping issues. If both go, don’t be surprised to see United’s number 40 be promoted to number one.

The rock – Axel Tuanzebe

He spent the season on loan at Championship side Aston Villa and alongside the likes of John Terry it has greatly aided his development and his footballing maturity.

Quick, strong, good in the air and composed, Tuanzebe has all the attributes that Mourinho looks for in a centre-back.

With United’s centre-back crisis still ongoing since the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand all those years ago, Tuanzebe could well be the new Ferdinand that United have been missing

The defender or the midfielder? – Timothy Fosu-Mensah

The promising Dutchman rose to fame under his compatriot Louis van Gaal when Antonio Valencia was suffering with injury and Matteo Darmian was covering for Luke Shaw on the left. He naturally grew into the right-back role and his pace and strength enabled him to mould easily into a bullish yet top-class full-back.

However, after his loan spell at Crystal Palace, he could well be converted into a centre-back after partnering Mamadou Sakho in the heart of the Eagles defence on many occasions at Selhurst Park.

Despite all this defensive discussion, we cannot look away from the fact that Fosu-Mensah was spotted as a box-to-box midfielder, and the Dutchman’s preference will probably be in midfield.

Nonetheless, his versatility is a fantastic problem for Mourinho to have, especially when the depth of United’s squad comes under investigation.

The flying Dutchman – Millen Baars

Another Dutch product brought in by Van Gaal’s team.

Baars is almost as exciting as Angel Gomes in the sense that he has electric pace and an eye for a pass.

However, what separates the two is the fact that Baars is more of an out-and-out winger in comparison to Gomes, who prefers an inside forward role when deployed out wide.

His crossing attributes will be something valued by Mourinho, who likes his sides to whip crosses into a typical number 9 centre forward; as seen with Diego Costa and Didier Drogba at Chelsea and with Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford.

The flamboyant wide man – Tahith Chong

Yet another Dutch prospect hauled in by Van Gaal, Chong was on the radars of Barcelona and Real Madrid before signing for United from Ajax – and his flamboyance and confidence give him a true Cristiano Ronaldo feel about him.

His willingness to run directly at his man and take him on may not be what Mourinho likes, nor will his frilly tricks and flicks be something that his manager enjoys, but Chong’s ability to mesmerise and entertain would be surely welcomed at Old Trafford, where the fans have been starved of decent, attacking football for some years now.
