Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake was arrested on Thursday evening for “escaping from lawful custody,” his lawyer said Friday morning.
MP Medard Ssegona, who is Zaake’s lawyer, today revealed that he obtained the information last night while visiting Zaake at Central Police Station where he is detained.
“The police plan to rush him to Arua and charge him with escaping from lawful custody and have him remanded,” said Ssegona.
Zaake is among 36 people who were last year charged with treason before the Gulu Chief Magistrates Court.
In addition, the Mityana MP is further accused of escaping from Police custody in Arua.
The MP, unlike his co-accused, has never been in court to respond to these charges, owing to his medical condition at the time.
Shortly before he left the country to get medical treatment abroad in September, 2018, Zaake was formally charged with the two offences and granted police bond.
He was supposed, as per the bond terms, to appear before the CIID on October 2, 2018.
He however did not return from treatment until October 10.
CID chief Grace Akullo was Thursday night quoted as saying Zaake had been apprehended for jumping police bond.
“We are taking him to Arua Court, then Gulu court,” she said.
Ssegona said today revealed that if Zaake gets bail, “they will re-arrest him and take him to Gulu to face treason.”
He said the detained lawmaker “is strong in spirit and he sent you greetings and asked you to remain strong as we close in on State House.”
MP Robert Kyagulanyi of People Power pressure group said he assured Zaake “of our support and comradeship, including taking measures to enable him secure his freedom at the earliest.
