Museveni announces Plans to Ban Boda Bodas & Taxis From Operating In City The Centre

The President of the republic of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta has unleashed that very soon the government will implement a new regulation where by the Boda boda cyclists will not be allowed to operate in the middle of the city center to pave way for more spacious vehicles in a bid to fight traffic congestion.

The president made this remarks on Wednesday at Nakivubo at the function of the launch of the construction of the Kampala flyover project at Nakivubo Blue Primary School.

“We shall soon introduce carriers for more people like mini buses and tricycles in the city .We need to phase out boda bodas that carry only two people for tricycles that carry many at once. I want the boda boda riders to start thinking and putting it in their plans,”Museveni said on Wednesday.

According to Museveni, infrastructural projects like the Kampala flyover will help save the city greatly from traffic congestion.

According to Museveni the new Multi-Modal Urban Transport Master plan for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area meant to relieve the city of traffic jam, taxis and boda bodas are set to be replaced with buses and trains to various city suburbs.

He further added on that other projects like the widening of the Busega- Kibuye road, a flyover at the Busega- Kibuye road and another flyover from Busega to Mpigi will soon kick off and will greatly help reduce congestion in the city and the neighbouring towns of the greater Kampala Metropolitan area.

The master plan will also see gazetting of  non-motorised corridors to cater for pedestrians as part of the  five year second phase of the Kampala Institutional and Infrastructural Development Project(KIIDP) that will cost over shs600 billion and funding jointly by the WorldBank and the Ugandan government.

The plan drawn by ROM Transportation Engineering, Cambridge Systematics and TNM consultancies will see a Suburban Passenger Rail put in place and will have the eastern and western routes.

The eastern route from Mukono to Kampala whereas the western route according to the plan will   stretch from Buloba to Kampala.

The Metro (underground rapid transit) will have three routes from Namanve to Kajjansi; Namanve to Nansana and Kajjansi to Nansana.
