The government on orders of President Museveni has given Shs 10 million in condolences to the family of Alex Nyesiga Atuheire, who was shot dead at Uganda-Rwanda border of Kamwezi on Friday evening.

Nyesiga, a resident of Nyakabungo village in Kamwezi Sub County was shot by Rwandan soldiers who had crossed into Uganda to arrest an unidentified smuggler accused of illegally taking second-hand clothes to Rwanda.

A scuffle erupted after the Rwandan soldiers impounded the motorcycle registration number RE-736G, which the alleged smuggler was using, drawing protests from residents who accused them of illegally crossing into Uganda’s territorial boundary to conduct an arrest. The shooting at Mpororo Trading Centre in Rukiga district also claimed the life of a Rwandan national John Batista Nkyerengye.

The government’s condolence to the Ugandan Family was delivered to his relatives by Rukiga Woman Member of Parliament Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi. According to Kamusiime, the money was given out on the orders of President Yoweri Museveni to purposely support the deceased’s children. Nyesiga is survived by four children.

Kamwezi Sub County Chairman Teddyson Niwagaba says that the incident should encourage Uganda to seek dialogue with Rwanda to end the animosity between the two neighbouring countries.

Rwanda closed its borders with Uganda on February 27, 2019, to purportedly expedite the construction of the single customs at Gatuna border. Rwanda advised truck drivers destined to Kigali to use Kagitumba border via Mirama Hills and also advised its citizens against travelling to Uganda, saying it couldn’t guarantee their safety.

Rwanda later accused Uganda of hosting and facilitating dissidents attached to the Rwanda National Congress-RNC and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda FDLR, abducting Rwandan Nationals in Uganda, some of whom are illegally detained and others deported.

Rwanda also deployed security officials and destroyed all temporary bridges to bar Rwandans from crossing to Uganda. Despite the border closure and warnings, Rwandans continue to cross to Uganda using porous borders to look for food and goods.
