Pep Guardiola reveals why he argued with Raheem Sterling after Manchester derby

Pep Guardiola has revealed he rowed with Raheem Sterling over his showboating in the Manchester derby.

Manchester City strolled to a 3-1 win over rivals United thanks to goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan .

But the Spanish boss was not happy with his forward at the final whistle and appeared angry at a series of exaggerated step overs by the touchline.

“I like a lot when he played [but] the best way to defend a result is to keep the ball,” Guardiola said. “He made some movements with the legs, we can avoid it but he is young, he can improve.”

However the City boss was delighted with the display from his side particularly in a second half they dominated.

“We spoke at half time that we could play better and we were much better with the goal [from Aguero] after five minutes of the half.

“It was difficult, they defended so deep and they are aggressive, they follow man to man. But after 2-1, we react well, we don’t concede chances and step by step we regain our game.”

Guardiola denied the three points had any added significance given the opposition with regard to the title race.

But he said he was pleased with the improved form his side are showing against

“Man City right now, Liverpool and Chelsea and even Arsenal and Tottenham , they all have numbers to be champions, not just Man City,” said Guardiola.

“But last season we didn’t get points in Anfield. We draw. Last season we lost here [against United]. Now we won. So it is good.”

Mourinho felt the exertions of three away games in a week including a gruelling trip to win in Turin against Juventus has taken the edge of his players.

But he refused to blame the absence of Paul Pogba, missing with a “small injury”, for the defeat.

“He is important for us in many aspects but I don’t like to speak about [particular] players after we lose. We had to play Marouane Fellaini when he was not ready to play for 90 minutes.

“But I can imagine when the result was 2-1 to bring a fresh Fellaini, I think they would be in big big trouble.”
