The three security guards arrested over last week’s armed robbery at Cheap General Hardware shop in Nansana municipality, Wakiso district are innocent, police has said.

Six heavily armed thugs moving on three motorcycles raided the hardware shop and shot dead two people critically injuring three others. An unspecified amount of money was robbed at the time it was being prepared to be taken to the bank.

The two shot dead at the shop included Jimmy Atikuru, the assistant manager of the hardware shop and Frank Aruho, while the third person who died later in the hospital was identified as, Amin Bugembe.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said investigations have since revealed that the security guards whose identities were concealed had no prior knowledge of the robbery and a decision has since been taken to have them released not later than today Thursday.

The guards have reportedly explained that they did not respond because the robbers’ guns were of more advanced types than theirs. The trio is said to have indicated in their statements that their guns release a single bullet per interval yet the thugs’ guns could release multiple bullets at a single shooting.

Police said the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage retrieved from the hardware shop does not clearly show details of motorcycles and faces of attackers. He, however, said forensic experts were analysing the video and exhibits extracted from the scene. Onyango added that a hunt for criminals was on and some leads were being followed.
