Alexis Sanchez has told his agent he wants to leave Manchester United, according to reports.
The Chilean has just four goals in 29 appearances since joining United from Arsenal in January and has recently struggled to hold down a place in the starting XI.
The Spanish giants could look to make a move in the January transfer window, with summer arrival Mariano Diaz struggling to make an impact since returning to the Bernabeu.
A move to Real Madrid wouldn’t go down well in Barcelona, where the 29-year-old spent three years before moving to the Premier League in 2014.
The Chile international was a revelation at Arsenal, bagging 80 goals in 166 appearances and helping the Gunners to two FA Cups.
Sanchez has struggled to replicate the form he displayed for the north London giants since joining United at the start of the year, and was dropped for the Manchester derby defeat last weekend, despite Mourinho saying he was ‘available for the team’.
Sanchez was dropped from the United squad completely for the 3-1 defeat at West Ham back in September, a decision that reportedly left him furious with Red Devils boss Mourinho.
The forward angered United fans at the weekend after appearing to laugh on the bench while his team were losing to rivals Manchester City.
With half-time moments away and the Red Devils trailing 1-0, Sanchez and team-mate Juan Mata were seen smiling and joking on the bench.
United fans immediately reacted to the footage with one supporter tweeting: “That Mata and Sanchez smile just shows how those players don’t give a f***.”
United went on to lose the derby 3-1 at the Etihad, with David Silva opening the scoring for the hosts, before Sergio Aguero doubled their lead shortly after the restart.
The Red Devils pulled one back through an Anthony Martial penalty, before Ilkay Gundogan sealed the points for Pep Guardiola’s men five minutes from time.
Paul Pogba injury update after Man Utd star pulls out of France squad
Paul Pogba is expected to return for Manchester United straight after the international break — having responding well to treatment.
The £89million Frenchman missed Sunday’s 3-1 derby mauling by neighbours Manchester City after picking up a thigh injury in United’s midweek Champions League win away to Juventus.
Midfielder Pogba was at the Etihad to watch his team-mates lose but was unable to play a part in the defeat.
The 25-year-old, said to be making good progress in his recovery, has been replaced in the France squad for their upcoming games against Holland on Friday and Uruguay three days later by Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko.
United boss Jose Mourinho said of Pogba’s knock: “He was injured during the game in Turin.
“He resisted. He felt that he could resist. He felt that was such a crucial match for the team. He made that sacrifice for us, and then it was impossible for him to recover for this match.”
Club and country team-mate Anthony Martial is also out for France, despite playing the full 90 minutes on Sunday.
The pair joined up with the new world champions’ squad on Monday morning at their Clairefontaine training base, but both were swiftly ruled out and replacements summoned.
The French camp confirmed the news through their official Twitter account.
They tweeted: “Paul Pogba (thigh) and Anthony Martial (adductors) were looked at by Dr Franck Le Gall this afternoon. They have been replaced by Alexandre Lacazette and Moussa Sissoko.”
Pogba, a key member of France’s World Cup winning side this summer, moved to reassure fans his injury was not serious with an Instagram post showing him walking and smiling, captioning the post: “Back soon @manchesterunited @equipedefrance”.
