Police in Kibuku District are investigating circumstances under which a suspect reportedly committed suicide in the holding cells at Kibuku Central Police Station on April 22.

The Kibuku District Police Commander, Mr Bashir Siriba, confirmed the incident, saying that the suspect identified as Moses Naulika Bonna alias Moses Mbulaiteye, was facing murder charges.

It’s alleged that the suspect, a resident of Kasasira town council was found dangling in the police cells after he reportedly took his own life using a shirt. He allegedly took advantage of being alone in the police cell to commit suicide.

Police said that Mbulaiteye had been in hiding after he escaped from the Police following the murder of his girlfriend Mildred Mirembe Buyondo alias Milly, a second year student at Makerere University, in July 2005

It’s alleged that Mbulaiteye who was a self-styled doctor in Nsoba Zone, Kyebando, committed the offence by tying a rope around his girlfriend’s neck and strangled her while she was sleeping. After, he allegedly tried to take his own life using drugs, but was not successful as he was discovered the following morning lying unconscious besides his deceased girlfriend.

“The man was arrested and again he attempted to commit suicide while in Police cells in Kampala, and was admitted to Nsambya Hospital from where he escaped with one piece of handcuffs, while the other remained on the hospital bed. On April 22, 2019 Police uncovered him while hiding in Kasasira after years of a manhunt,” Mr Siriba said.

He added that upon arrest, Mbulaiteye was taken to Kibuku Central Police Station as preparations to transfer him to Kampala were underway, but unfortunately he committed suicide, on his third attempt.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the man committed suicide using his shirt,” Mr Siriba said.

Police took the body to Mbale Hospital mortuary for post mortem before it could be handed over to the relatives for burial.
